I'm a Dutch interaction designer. I currently live in Copenhagen (Denmark), where I freelance. I used to work in web design, now I'm branching out into areas such as gaming, dataviz, physical computing, mobile…whatever I can get into really.

I've been only using Processing actively since little under a year or so. It's a way for me to get back into programming but without the pain. Being a visual thinker, processing is a perfect fit. I did a quick prototype of a mobile game and am now doing some very basic dataviz.

I plan on using Processing for prototypes and 'sketches' in client work as well. Sometimes some running code is just the best way to communicate a design idea.

Many thanks to all that have made Processing a reality. I think it's pretty awesome.

PS—This is my first post here. Hello everyone.

Hello everybody!
What an interesting thread!
I'm Yonas Sandbæk, a lead-programmer in a multimedia-company up in Norway.
I use Processing for some projects at work, i.e. our MultiTouch stuff, but mostly it's sketching things out.
At night, when the job no longer holds my mind, I dig out my creative side (whenever I'm not too drained), and put my heart into Processing.
I just discovered the beautiful datasets in mp3-files, and I'm playing with that, but mostly it's been randomly generated art, and a couple of games.

And even though it sounds sentimental, I think I love Processing. It saved me from a lot of boring evenings, and has never turned it's back on me.. OK, that last part's not true, but then you guys have been here to help, and I'm truly thankful for that!

I also just got my fingers out (yes, all of them), and made a new website. Still http://seltar.org
It lacks in content, at least under projects, but they're coming. Need to redo a bunch of them. The site will also include a nice tutorial section, which I also would need writers for (message me). I currently have no tutorials, which is why the pages are hidden for now.

Hurray for Processing!

Hola

I'm Ricard Marxer, currently a PhD student at Music Technology Group of UPF, Barcelona.  However my PhD is about music cognition and more specifically active perception, so I don't use Processing.

I first discovered and used Processing during my Digital Arts Masters, with which I made Caligraft and Geomerative.

Now I use Processing for personal projects or teaching.  My last course in Processing can be found at:

Infoviz & Generart (Spanish only) It's a 12 hour course but could be useful to some.

Looking forward to getting back to use more Processing as soon as I get more free time.

See you all and visca Processing!
ricard

Hello, everyone.

I'm Bill Van Loo. I am a teacher, musician and visual artist. My day job is working as the Technology Specialist for Honey Creek Community School, a public charter school (kindergarten through 8th grade) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I first started using Processing after finding Design By Numbers and loving how easy it was to do visual programming. I've only recently started to use Processing seriously, and my first pieces were displayed at the Sync07 festival in Ann Arbor this year as the visual backdrop for a music performance I did.

You can see video of that performance here:

Also, still photos:

I'm hoping to start teaching Processing at the middle school level, since we did Design By Numbers this year and it worked out well.

Bill

I'm a 17 year old high school student currently living in Paris, France. I started programming with PHP and Actionscript, but Processing was the tool that introduced me to many object-oriented concepts. It continues to be the language I go to try out new concepts when I'm unsure of myself. I like it because I don't have to worry about a complicated IDE or anything. It's plug and play. I attribute much of my interest and any success I've had with programming to Processing.

greetings all

I work as a designer for an interactive agency in London. My day time work mostly focuses on the visual design of websites with minor front end development (css, bits of php and javascript). Using Processing for the last 8 months or so has really helped me get a handle on the more conceptual side to programming as well as helping me refine my programming practices considerably. I understand php, javascript and actionscript so much more since I have been experimenting and having fun in processing.

Thanks for making it and thanks for the books! I own both Ira's and Ben and Casey's books, both of which have been a fantastic help in getting my head around this stuff.

Thanks again!

I am Nicolas Kunysz and I am finishing my studies of industrial design at La Cambre in Bruxelles,

I discovered p55 2 years ago from a friend who's typographer,
I use processing for personals experimentations about some new ways to make design, like create a chair with the word "chair".. I wasnt used to code before but processing is just perfect to learn it; the website, the librairies and the big community around help a lot to fastly create and prototype ideas.

So thank you all,

Nicolas

I just got out of high school. I was learning programming during my spare time and a friend recommended Processing to get started. It has been a great stepping stone for me to jump into other languages, namely  Java, (and then) Javascript and C.

Still use it when I want to make a mini-program quickly just to demonstrate a concept.

My name's Martin Alcock and I'm a recent graduate of Graphic Art & Design from Leeds Metropolitan uni, trying to get a design job (anyone got one going Wink )

I got into processing after meeting Matt Pyke of Universal Everything when he came to give a talk at my Uni.

I had done bits of programming before coming to processing, mostly within BASIC syntax, particularly with a language called DarkBasic.
I use processing because its a proper programming language (syntax etc), is easily extensible, easy to use and geared towards what I want to do with programming.

I currently use processing either to make fun little toys (like my fractal inkspots, or silly string)or as a part of my workflow for creating videos (like my YCN Culture Show Competition entry)

I'd love the chance to use it in a professional context, but I'm not too sure the idea's quite found its feet fully in the UK yet.

Hi, my name is Charles Dietrich. I'm just getting into processing, though I'm an experienced software developer and I've been playing with actionscript 3 for two years.

In my day job I 'combine the romance of computer science with the romance of accounting' (to paraphrase Philip Greenspun) working for a maker of check-processing software. I live & work in upstate New York (not the city).

In my free time I am working on music visualization software, which I hope to share with y'all soon. In the last two weeks I translated the entire project (1500 lines of code, it's rather complex) from actionscript to Processing, because, well, Processing is cooler than actionscript. This was my first exposure to Processing. My next project in Processing will be an eco-visualization.

I'm working to improve my artistic abilities, which are not on par with my programming abilities. I think processing is a great way to produce art, I'm really impressed with what people here have been able to do, sometimes with just a few lines of code.

As a programming geek, I take an interest in SVG (scalable vector graphics) and am interested in Processing's nascent Candy SVG library.

Hello!  My name is Daniel Shiffman and I owe my job to Processing.  I started programming as an ITP (http://itp.nyu.edu) student in 2001.  In the spring 2003, we started an experiment offering a class called "Procedural Painting."  Its success led us to replace macromedia director with Processing in our Introduction to Computational Media Course (http://itp.nyu.edu/icm).  I also use Processing in several other classes that I teach (http://www.shiffman.net/teaching).

I used Processing as the base platform for ITP's "Big Screens" show on the 120x12 foot video wall in NYC's IAC building (designed by Frank Gehry).  http://itp.nyu.edu/bigscreens/

And, if that weren't enough, I have a programming book (with Processing) coming out in August!  I'm hoping this book will complement Ben and Casey's as well as Ira's.  It's meant for the complete beginner and dedicates half of the book to the basics:  pixels, variables, conditionals, loops, objects, and arrays.  The second half covers some more advanced topics: 3d, serial, image processing, etc.  It's meant to be workbook like with homework exercises, fill in the blanks, etc.

Thank you Processing!!!

Hello,

My Name is Matthias Dörfelt and I am a 20 year old communication Design student from Hamburg / Kiel Germany. I rather come from a design/illustration background which you can propably tell when you take a look at my online portfolio:
www.mokafolio.de

As you can see I havent updated in a while because after starting to learn processing I simply didn't find the time to work on any illustrations. Processing introduced me to OOP since I had a rather poor progaming background coming from PHP, SQL and Actionscript.

You can take a look at my first results since november/december 2007 at my vimeo and flickr account:

http://vimeo.com/user320217
http://www.flickr.com/photos/59697360@N00/

I am planning to combine processings interactivity with my designs and illustrations to get away from the computational look which is not necessarily something bad but not the way that fits me I guess.

Thank you Processing!

Hi,

My name is David Wicks and I enjoy using processing. I was introduced to Processing by Ira Greenberg a few years ago while searching for a way to make responsive architectural projections. Since my introduction, I've created a lot of stuff, including some sound-responsive pieces ( http://vimeo.com/349804 ), print work, a simple drawing machine (using arduino), and a camera-controlled space invaders game ( http://vimeo.com/912985 ). I use processing because it makes all of those projects possible and allows me to realize ideas other tools can't.

It's been great finding out a bit more about some of the others using the environment.

Thanks for creating a programming environment that removes the hurdles of installing and compiling I've only recently learned exist.
