use of fonts that come with processing

Apologies because this is *probably* covered somewhere but I couldn't find it:

what are the terms of use for using and then redistributing (in jars) the fonts that come bundled with proccesing?

Not that I want to, but wh

(sorry, keyboard went crazy)

I was about to say, not that I want to, but what if I wanted to use those fonts in another application?  Either a static image that used them, or for something else entirely?

we're not certain of the legality of us distributing the fonts that are found in processing, versus you creating bitmaps of your own fonts, so we've decided to remove them from processing 70+ to avoid any potential issues.

we also consider typographers a sister community, and don't want to infringe on their work.

however, i'm reasonably sure that using "create font" on a font that you own and distributing that with a piece is ok. it's just unclear whether we can create a bunch of fonts for you and distribute them with processing itself.

which is a long way of saying, i'd avoid using the included fonts outside processing--they're also going to be poor replacements, with fixed sizes, no kerning, etc.

Hrrmm.

"A font that I own" -- do I OWN any fonts? Like the ones that come with Windows?

Let me be specific, I do a
  font = loadFont("Futura-Bold.vlw.gz");
for this one app I'm making that lets you use the font as a mask for an image behind.  I'd like to make a whole little CGI thing where people can upload their own photos, enter their own text, and play with it 'til they get a pleasing result. Could I probably keep with this or do I need to see out a public domain font and then use the Create Font tool?

I'm not much of a font wonk, I just need a nice, bold font without a lot of space between characters (doing similar stuff in XP I usually use Impact)

how about a "font that you have a license for" if you'd prefer to be technical about it. yes, this would include the windows fonts.

all i can do is let you know our direction with processing, and our opinion on the included fonts being a potential legal issue (though obscure).

just use "create font" with impact as you wish and you should be fine.

Probably a dumb question, but since I haven't been around much, you've all missed these...

Aren't there open source (or related) fonts that you can use or include? Some might even be of good quality.

the dumber the better if it makes it an easier question.

for java to load a font, it has to be in truetype (not cff/tt if that means anything to you) format, and most of the pd fonts (there's a big urw set that's included with some linux distros) i've seen are postscript. bitstream released one of their fonts for use in open source stuff, but it'd just be one font.

in the end, i think it's easier to just have people use "create font" which should keep things within bounds.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to sound all legalistic before.

I think for a web art toy, it's not really practical to move "create font" onto the enduser...

I guess I'll use Big Corporate Fonts, at least until I get a Cease and Desist...that way I'm sticking it to the man rather than some hardworking typography wonk.
