Scriptographer - Illustrator scripting
« on: May 18th, 2004, 9:52pm »

Just thought I would post a link to a tool that's been around for a while, but not enough people know about: Scriptographer by Jürg Lehni (of Hektor and Lineto fame.)

It's a plug-in for Adobe Illustrator that allows you to script using Javascript and the internal Document Object Model of Illustrator. Jürg has just updated it to work with Illustrator 10 and CS on both Mac OS and Windows.

See the www.scriptographer.org site for examples. One of the coolest things is that you can define your own algorithmic drawing tools inside Illustrator.

Jürg is Swiss, he did Hektor with another guy. He designed the Lineto site, which I think is an excellent piece of functional + cool web design.

ps. Just to plug one of my favorite Swiss design teams: Norm. The web site is a bit weird, but it has some real nuggets hidden inside it. I would call their work algorithmic, if not computational (they don't program...)

a pleasure to discover that swiss school, it seems that the german-speaking areas of the planet have a particular attraction to vectorism... suddenly, postscript and adobe sound like nordic words to me

marius, a propos "what a small world we're leaving in": did you notice that we're side by side on rhizome fresh art?

more swiss vector-art ... jurg in combination with urs (his brother) and rafi, created Vectorama some years ago: http://www.vectorama.org/ ...back then i was heavily into director, and talked to jurg about the multiuser stuff behind the scenes... it turns out that the macromedia multiuser server (2.0 back then) wasn't good enough, so he write his own in java... you gotta give it to the guy... he's got genuine talent!

Yes, I saw that and smiled. Keep in mind, tho, art never stays fresh very long.
