Graduate School
« on: Aug 13th, 2003, 6:45pm »

I've been thinking about going back to school, something along the lines of Interaction Design/Interactive Telecommunications/Physical Computing/Information Visualization.. basicly, I come from a graphic design background (BS in design, Univ. of Cincinnati 1999), and have been working with programatic creation of visual compositions in my spare time for several years (and some dabbling into physical computing lately). now i'm thinking about shifting priorities and making a spare time hobby into a full time pursuit.

My question is: Does anyone know of Masters programs that I should look into? I live in NYC, and would especially like input on NY schools, though if the program was right I *might* be willing to move, so really any schools would be considered.

thanks

There are good programs at New York University (Interactive Telecommunication Program), Parsons, and Pratt. I suggest moving to Italy and studying at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. They all have a different focus so where you chose depends on what you want to do. There are some people floating around this board from all four schools.

i'm studying Interaction Design (MA) at the Royal College of Art in London, which adresses alot of thinking around interaction design as a whole, how we as human beings relate to / react to and understand technology. Projects are very hands-on based and we do quite a bit of physical computing aswell.

yeah, i've briefly looked into all 4 of those schools. Ivrea and NYU are at the top of my list right now, though i really need to dig for more details about Pratt and Parsons.

Thanks for the input.

sorry for the embedded pragmatism, but...

one thing to consider (at least for me) is the total tuition costs. Interaction RCA is one of my first choices, pensum-wise, but it was astoundishly expensive for non-UE citizens (as i am).

then there are many that offer scholarships, as interaction ivrea does. others are almost free (i think the swedish and finnish ones)

to take into consideration? depends...
