Robert,
You may want to check the Artist Interface Device (AID) being developed by the good people at InterAccess here in Toronto.

From their web site
Quote:
The Art Interface Device (AID) is a microprocessor platform for building electronic installation art. It can also be used as an interface between such artworks and computers. It will enable the artworks to respond to people and the physical environment.

The AID is conceived as a common platform for the development of a comprehensive tool set for solving the most common interfacing problems faced by artists using microprocessors, electronic sensors and actuators in an artistic context. It is intended to reduce the skill barrier to getting started with microprocessor interfacing.

The AID system will be distributed under the General Public Licence and developed by the AID user community.

It might require more elbow grease than makingthings.com but the price/flexibility is better.

The AID people are holding a launch party a week today after a year or more of developing this with an arts grant from the Cdn gov't.

I almost forgot the URL:
http://www.interaccess.org/aid/index.html

Hope that helps.

Hardware has been the big thing for years.
Just not for all you Flash jockeys.
But now with the Teleo board from Making Things you can easily join the fun.

We have some good information up here:

My employer purchased the Phidget Starter Kit ( http://tinyurl.com/43hcc ) and I will say that it absolutely does not disappoint.  We've already hooked it up to flash and processing, and the possibilities appear pretty much endless at this point (right now we have a webcam mounted to a servo, and an eyeball in flash that looks at your mouse, and moves the webcam around).

We're going to use Phidgets in conjunction with processing and sonia to demonstrate engineering concepts at an upcoming eng. summer camp.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributes to all of these technologies and softwares.
