8x8 grid of Griffin Powermates controlled with Processing...

So, in a nutshell, processing is communicating with 64+ USB devices via Java and C++ (wonderfully written by Aaron, a coworker here at Barbarian Group).

With this version, Processing is running a ripple algorithm with the press of each knob button. As an afterthought, Pitaru's Sonia library was added so that each knob controlled a sinewave tone through Live Output.  When you press and hold a knob, all the non-pressed tones start to pitch shift downwards and their light dims.  When you release, a ripple emerges whose strength is dependant on the amount of time in which you pressed.

Need to think of more things to do with it.  Already made it a 8x8 monitor which showed webcam video.  Made it a sound visualizer not unlike an equalizer.

Ha.  Right now it basically sounds like what people in 1960 thought computers would sound like in 2000.

i like the audio, you should keep it minimal and stripped down. more effective. i'd hate to see it with tacky synth washes and beats.

This is absolutely beautiful. The blue 'halos' organized in a matrix are producing wonderful and relaxing lighting. With sound, this is even more neat !

Threw up a couple more videos.

I am a bit excited by the _bug video.  I was working on making some precanned animations and found that if I triggered a second animation before turning off the first animation, the lights go wild.  Kind of like the mating of cellular automata and electricity.

This is beautiful!

I'd like to get my (one) powermate to talk to processing -- can you tell us more about the java/c++ "glue" which connects them?

Steve, yep... USB hub array... quite convoluted really... daisy-chained from here to New Guinea. Need to find some multi-port hubs with more than 4 ins.

gggg, I will get more information posted about that C++/Java mess.  Since I didnt write the code, i need to get the info from Aaron, the guy who muddled through it.

rgovostes, Hell, $2650 is nuthin.  I spent that much yesterday at Starbucks.  But just so you know, corporate funding is a nice thing when it comes to rediculous projects like this one.

Thanks all for the kind words.  Got sidetracked by some real work but will be getting back into this over the next couple weeks.  Looking into laser-cut plexi for the housing.  Should be an interesting process.
