We closed this forum 18 June 2010. It has served us well since 2005 as the ALPHA forum did before it from 2002 to 2005. New discussions are ongoing at the new URL http://forum.processing.org. You'll need to sign up and get a new user account. We're sorry about that inconvenience, but we think it's better in the long run. The content on this forum will remain online.

Suggestion: eliminate regularly all users with 0 posts after some days

+1

I also think that would help keeping the board clean.

Could prevent new members having PM and WWW link for say one month and to restrict length of their forum ID to make commercial links harder.

Just a thought!

Quark, you can't restrict PM (personal messages, internal to the board), but perhaps you mean e-mail address. Although these are quite harmless and spammers don't fill it anyway.
Would be better to restrict signatures.
But I don't know if the board allows such restrictions unless hacking it.

OK, we're following up on the suggestion to remove all users with 0 posts. I absolutely hate to do this, but I hate having the board locked down even more. I hope valid members will sign up again and understand the complexity of the situation.

Deleteing all users with 0 Posts is a good suggestion, but for how long?

Hello roglig, new user creating an account to answer a thread about board administration...
I suppose this clean up task is done by script, so it can be run by a cron job or something similar.
The answer is thus: for as long as necessary.
So as long as the moderators are vigilant, creating provisional accounts for future spamming is now useless. Smiley

I've removed a large number of accounts, in particular those with zero posts. This also removed a number of legitimate accounts, but we hope those people will understand.

There are also some other potential spam accounts that were included, but because these losers are obviously reading/posting here, I won't get into the details of how we're detecting spam or flagging bad accounts. Once Casey and I can get a chance to discuss how we'll proceed for the future, we'll enable registration again. This is such an incredible waste of our free time, and we really appreciate those who have been helping out.

There is a special place in hell reserved for spammers like these.

I regularly visit this forums but unfortunately my account was one of the accounts that got deleted Sad  I hope we can do something to detect those spammers so that people with legit accounts won't suffer

Forums and instructions are sold to people as a way to build their page rank. Good luck for those who try it but I'm sure most are deleted.

I thought the spam was behind us, but I found back a message with a commercial link on it (while looking for old code) and today I eliminated a number of dummy first posts quoting a previous message and just telling "thanks it helped me as well". There is also a new member with an obviously commercial name...

PhiLho,

So we can take care of this, please email me at my Reas address rather than posting this type of info to the forum.
