Simple L-Systems library for processing
Jan 9th, 2010, 5:17am

When I checked to see whether there was an existing library for L-Systems I came across a lively debate between Casey Reas, Ben Fry and Karsten Schmidt (aka toxi) on the future direction of processing. I wonder what toxi will think of me making it even easier to produce L-System sketches.
You can download my library from http://kenai.com/projects/l-system-utilities.

It's funny/scary to see how many people have misunderstood my core concerns of that entire thread from back then. I take absolutely no issues with L-Systems, but used them as an example of the emerging social developments/attitudes of using them back then (combined with the growing brand value of Processing)... I'm not gonna scratch old wounds again, but I still stand by much of what I said largely because experience of recent years has re-confirmed many points many times. So just relax!

Jeffg on the 'Update Libraries' thread was asking why libraries that show up here don't make it to the contributed libraries. I can think of a couple of reasons:
1. libraries posted here don't fully satisfy the requirements (yet)
2. posting a library here can be a way of testing the level of interest
Both apply to my LSystems library which I've only checked on linux, so I would be interested to know what experience Windows/Mac user have had using the library. Any other comments/suggestions would be welcome.  Cool

I have now migrated my library to http://wiki.github.com/monkstone/LSystems-Utilities/,because Kenai (Oracle) are shutting down the service. It's a pity because the Netbeans integration was excellent. For a funky example using my L-Systems library checkout http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=7323.

I have just updated my LSystems library on Project Kenai http://kenai.com/projects/l-system-utilities, where it will stay until it gets migrated to Java.net. I like project Kenai because of the excellent integration with NetBeans (Oracle managed to create some uncertainty about the future of project Kenai earlier this year, which is why I copied my project to Git Hub, NB: the Git Hub version has not been updated). The mods are minor apart from the fact the zipped library layout now follows the processing guidelines.
