Processing vs ActionScript 3.0? (Read 1645 times)
Processing vs ActionScript 3.0?
Aug 28th, 2009, 3:48pm

I've been using Processing off and on for quite a while now, and it's been (for the most part) a genuine pleasure to use. Still, out of curiosity, how does ActionScript 3.0 compare in terms of speed, flexibility, etc.? Or are they apples & oranges?

The ActionScript code for drawing is highly optimized and shapes are drawn to the screen faster than in Processing (except when using the OpenGL Library). This allows Flash applications to be large in pixel dimensions and make heavy use of transparency and antialiased graphics.

The difference when using pure OpenGL (rather than Processing's streamlined OpenGL commands) is another huge speed jump.      --Ben

I wonder how Processing's P2D renderer compares for 2D stuff, though... It's supposed to be highly optimized too, right?

I haven't tested, I'd take that reference page at its word...
but, you can still use OpenGL mode to draw in 2D and take advantage of hardware acceleration.
