May 12th, 2009, 4:10am

hi, I'm working in multitouch project, and i will like to know if you can share with me, the best USB webcams for blobs detection that you know.
i'm thinking to buy a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 because it has up to 30 frames per second and up to 1600 x 1200 pixels video capture, but i don't know if i can stop the Autofocus system.
or may be a Hercules Webcam Deluxe, dou you know it?
I'll be please if you can share some of your experience,
thanks,

Rodrigo

well, imho, go cheap. the only scenarios where i noticed a big difference with good cams were the ones in which i needed to detect ar markers from a distance.
for doing multitouch you'll be working with thresholded images in ir. i really think, every cam will do the trick.

I agree with naus3a, a cheap webcam is definitely the way to go. Especially considering you'll most likely down res the video stream to do the blob detection to speed up computation time. I have a Logitech Quickcam Chat or something, which is fairly old but works fine for multitouch stuff, just remember whatever webcam you get you most likely will need to take it apart to remove the ir filter.

hey! I used the Sony PS3 Webcam. I tried the floppy disk filter method with this camera first but was getting too much IR noise. I ended up buying an IR filter for the PS3 Webcam from OmegaBob on ebay. With this filter added the PS3 worked really well and I was also getting a really good frame rate.

Im happily using a TerraCam X2 i bought for 50 euros.

it uses the UVC protocol (I'm a mac user) and has manual focus. It also has two handy screws that make it easy to open. The only thing is that I had to use a grindstone to remove the IR blocker.

PS: in the beginning i was to use a QuickCam® S 7500™ on pc (my mom had it as a gift and never used it so it was very convenient) but I was experiencing an annoying 1sec delay with it's own software..

Hope this help.
