Get System Audio
May 1st, 2009, 9:10pm

Is there a sound library in existence that will allow a Processing application to retrieve mixed system audio?

There are functions in Minim that allow you to retrieve audio from line in, and you can write a frequency to line out, is there a way to capture what's being sent to line out?

For example, is there some way that I can play an audio clip in a media player, and have Processing capture what's being played, regardless of what's player is being used?

Thanks for your time,
Joseph.

I think it depends on your OS and soundcard to some extent.

If you're on windows, what minim listens to isn't necessarily Line In, it's whatever is et up as the recodring source in the sound control panel.

To change this on Windows, double click on the "volume" icon in the system tray, then go to Options -> Properties and then select "Recording" and make sure all the boxes below are ticked, then hit okay. You should now see a selection of possible inputs, one of them will hopefully be "Stereo Mix" or similar, if you select that one, then Minim will hear whatever sounds your computer plays.
