the final version of this for now.  On to something else with boids i think.  The HSB on this may not be quite correct as i am unsure on converting an angle to the HSB range (my trig is trash!).  Speed went from 21 FPS to 36 FPS after first 15 of seconds initialisation, do try and use the bitwise shifting of colors as it's way faster.

The "blue Baddies" are quite fun and i could see lots of possibilities there.  

In this code i now have a UI, HSB work, a backbuffer, & motion blur..so it should be pretty useful for newbies i hope.

Very cool!  I've also been scavenging from Daniel's tutorials.  Admittedly you're much further ahead than I am!  

I like how if you mess with the sliders a bit, you can approximate effects like snow...

great stuff. allows a lot of options with the sliders. i've been using the flocking example to learn from as well, going line by line to figure out what does what and ended up with this:
