The past few issues of the Communications of the ACM have contained a lot of "infographic"-like graphics, most of the time unattributed, with no information as to what they are trying to show, and no details as to how they were made.  

The Aug '08 cover was attributed to Ben Fry.

So, it looks cool, but what is it?  What is it trying to show?  How was it made?
