Permanent Installations with Processing
Sep 14th, 2008, 4:55pm

Hello,

A few years ago our group installed a large scale reactive wall in the lobby of the Toronto Sheraton written in Processing (actually the newsticker is processing too). It has been going for over 2 years and we are just now returning for our first tune up. I wanted to share the project, but also see what other "permanent" installations people were doing and maybe we could all share some tips for maintaining them.

Some things we learned (hope these aren't too obvious):
* Using DisplayConfigX to force resolutions when your video is being extended via cat5. http://www.3dexpress.de/index.html

* We tend to use analog video for video sensing with a DAC converter on the side of the computer. We just completed an installation with firewire over 100 ft. and there are just too many issues.

* We used sonar sensors and arduino instead of video sensing so that we didn't have to deal with lighting variations. I would probably use video sensing if I were to redo it. There advances in speed and technique for video sensing has come along way in just a few years.

* Applescript to restart the app in case it crashes (power interruptions, crazy unforeseen circumstance, etc.)
