overlaying a pattern over a shape

i was wondering if anyone could help me out.  I want to use a complex shape as a mask, such that an image with a pattern on it can be overlaid upon the image and act almost like the skin of the image.  What would be the simplest way of doing this? Thanks peeps.

have you tried using the different blend() modes between a black&white image acting as your matte and the pattern image to be masked - you can then apply result to display window, or another image.
