Should the libraries page be reorganized?
Jan 10th, 2008, 4:48pm

hi,

i strongly feel that the libraries reference page needs some cleaning up. as there are more and more libraries, the harder it get's to really find a specific library and to browse them. I personally think the floating 3-coloumn layout is not the optimal solution.

I guess it would help to break apart the sub-categories. To show what I mean I hacked up the html/css of the page:

EDIT: removed page so nobody gets confused

what do you think?

That looks a lot easier to navigate. Nice mock up.

yep. looks good.
could use an index at the top, so you can directly jump to the sections.

thanks!

Yeah, agree with fjen.

I think a dropdown might be in order, to go directly to the section.

On second thought.. I despise dropdowns. An index is probably smarter.

I would prefer a javascript solution like this http://eskimoblood.de/surfacelib/ with a menu in the left column and the libs in the other ones.

I agree, an index (or similar) defenitely belongs there. I think the same principle as on the FAQ-page (http://processing.org/faq.html) would make sense.

Andreas, what I don't like about this JS solution is the fact, that the page isn't searchable by the browsers built in search function. Especially if there are no additional search/filter functionality for the library-list. I think it would also make sense to keep the navigation principles consistent across the site. well, of course, some ajaxy search/filter mechanism would be nice... but would probably need significantly more effort to implement (but definetely would also make sense on the reference page... but that's another issue Wink)

by the way, who is the processing website guy?

Thank you getting this needed improvement going. Myself and fjen work on the site. fjen said that he'd make the fix.

We actually need someone to be the "librarian." This person would work with library creators to encourage them to open up their source, make sure things are documented properly before going up on the list etc. To manage the library thread of this board and to know when a library is ready to be added to (or removed from) the official list. Basically to be a facilitator and quality control.
