No capture devices on Windows?
Nov 20th, 2007, 1:43pm

Hello,

We have a problem with a student that has a PC (win xp) laptop. We cannot get Capture to work. After re-installing QuickTime Player (v7.3) QTJava seems to be fine, we can play back .mov files. But Capture.list() throws an exception saying that no capture devices were detected. This is with Processing 0.133.

We have tried two devices, an Unibrain Fire-i, and a Canopus ADVC-55. Both work on that computer in terms of their own software (in the Fire-i case) or in terms of the operating system (Windows automatically detects the Canopus and Video capture works through an OS utility application).

I guess it is a problem with QuickTime since despite QuickTime Pro is installed, there is no item "New video recording" in the player (which appears on Mac computers), only "New audio recording". Also in the player prefs, you can only configure an audio recording device, while on Mac we can configure the default video capture device.

The third possible device is an i-Sight camera but it doesn't have an optional external power supply so it cannot work on a 4-pin firewire socket.

Thanks for help!

we managed it:

de-installing QT 7
downloading and installing QT 6.5.2 from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652forwindows.html

downloading and installing WinVDIG 1.0.1 from http://www.eden.net.nz/7/20071008/
