ess: audio stream buffering delay?

I'm using processing with multiple wiring boards and a proximity sensor on each to change audio streams. when i start the applet, there is a bit of a lag until the sound plays. but after a short while, there is a long lag for streams to change. the sensor is reading, but the stream doesn't change until several minutes. it seems like there is a buffering issue. does anyone have any idea what might be causing the long lags and any suggestions for resolving them?
