Anyone tried it?  Should work right?

I can verify, The Canopus ADVC55 DV bridge works perfectly as a capture device.  Its pretty cool, because it allows you to feed ANY video signal (RCA, S-Video) into the ADVC55, to send the signal into Processing.  The rest of the Canopus ADVC line should work just as well, because they are all based on the same chip set.

I haven't tried it, but another common option are the Dazzle brand units (Hollywood, etc.), but I don't think those would work because they send out a non-standard DV signal that is reported to work only with their proprietary software.

As you were.
