Wiring: Processing + Electronics

Processing has a sister project called Wiring:
http://wiring.uniandes.edu.co/

Wiring is a programming environment and electronics i/o board for exploring the electronic arts, tangible media, teaching and learning computer programming and prototyping with electronics. It illustrates the concept of programming with electronics and the physical realm of hardware control which are necessary to explore physical interaction design and tangible media aspects

Wiring is an open project initiated by Hernando Barragán at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea and it is currently developed at the University of Los Andes

I had been looking around the pages for Wiring a couple of days ago because of instantSOUP. Wiring is an awesome project. I'll be trying to get (or to build) a few IOboards and begin teaching some kids the basics of processing and wiring. Should be pretty interesting.

Wiring now has a new URL:

I'm really enthusiast about this project. As we saw at Robert Hodgin's presentation at the FITC, there's a lot of great things to do combining physical devices and programming. I'm planning to join this project to control physical devices in architectural installations.

The project doesn't seems to be active yet (public), when will it be started? I was loking for the wiring board but I guess it's not available yet, no?

You might be interested in Arduino then. "Arduino consists of a small, inexpensive, and open i/o board based on the Atmega8, avr-gcc, and the Wiring IDE. It is normally used to deploy designs developed with Wiring. It's useful when you want to make multiple objects and don't want to give away your precious Wiring board."

You could download the CAD files, get your own PCB printed, buy the components and solder it together. Makes it sound easy Smiley It does look promising though.

You might also be interested in the muio interface, an open source usb board in development:
http://www.muio.org/interface.html

I will be making a Processing library for muio fairly soon.

Both projects are a little way off from people like us being able to use them.

So, is there any place where I could buy a wiring board if I don't want to build one myself ?

If it is about buying, I am confident about the fact that Hernando Barragan, the wiring project leader is about to produce 500 boards. I don't know the exact plan for those, but you should try to get in touch with him. The wiring board is not only powerful but beaytiful ... it may be an investment for just keeping it on the desk in your studio.

On the other hand, Arduino is Open Source, but it is possible to contact the development team and get a couple of boards now that they are in the beta-testing process. Beta testing is FOR FREE, and helps the community to grow.

In the future Arduino will not only be open-source, but also available for those with no time for soldering, just give the guys two more months.

Hi Everybody, yes boards are being produced (500), right now I am personally collecting orders from people, the site www.wiringboard.com is under construction as well and will handle all matters related to distribution. It is the first time such a number is produced so I had to spend huge ammounts of time monitoring and learning the process.
Components arrived and the boards are in assembling now.
I think a week or so is needed to get them out of the oven.
Thanks for your interest and stay tuned.

Any idea what the price of the boards will cost? Any early specs you can release? By the outset of the wiring board it sounds interesting and I might consider getting one.

Board price will be around US$60 NOT-CONFIRMED yet, since final calcultions have to be done at the end ff the process. This price doesn't include shipping and handling.

Sounds great. I am really excited about this project. I'd like to buy Wiring boards as soon as possible. Thanks for your developing this project.

Thanks for your kind words. boards are close to be finished, it hasn't been easy, boards are printed with a company, I had to get components from another one and assembly is done with another company, to ccoordinate the whole thing has been really exhausting and every company has its own timings, but they are comming out, they said they'll finish assembling next week and then they'll have to run an electrical test. I will upload the firmware in every board afterwards, it's been really crazy. I hope the 500 boards last a bit, but I have received so many orders that dunno Smiley

I allready sent you a PM but I'm posting here just to make sure. I'd like a board when they're finished, so, hope they'll be ready soon.

Cheers

I'd like 5 please!! Smiley

I tried the website (www.wiring.com), but it seemed to be down.

I am thinking of running a workshop for some MA design students over here in London, using Wiring and Proce55ing.  I am an electronic engineer/design graduate and currently tutor but have never used proce55ing or wiring before (I normally use director/PIC/BX 24).

I hear proce55ing is the future though and I need to learn it quickly so that I can have the expertise to teach my students.

Where is a good place to look to educate myself proce55ing and wiring?

Any workshops being conducted in London?

best

Wow.

Really cool.

Now I just have to find a way to clone myself so that there are more hours in the day.

Are you going to post here if and when the boards become available for order?

I will send you a PM as well.
