Parallel IO... on a new computer? How?

Hi,
I would like to interface processing with some basic parallel digital electronics (an LED, a few ICs) for a tech demo and I'm wondering how to get started. I've poked around the wiring website and it appears to be more for stand alone things, but I am probably rather muddled about the whole thing. I'm using an Apple Powerbook G4 (titanium) running Mac OS X.4. I remember doing a bit of parallel stuff using both C and qBasic on a 386 years back and I would like to interface my old stuff it with Processing on my Mac.

My problem is that none of my current computers have any form of serial interface. I'm wondering what my best bet for IO is, what kind of converters there are, and if anyone has any luck with something of this sort. It would be convenient if the device used USB or something, but I'm not sure how I would communicate with that in processing.

Is there any easy way to read and write digital bits using a USB adapter and processing?
