total newbie . . . what books to read?

Hello everyone, I've been really impressed everytime I've come back to this site over the last few years to glance at what people are doing.  I'd like to try to get into this kind of art myself, anyone want to recommend some books to read about Java or other languages?  I have "Java in a Nutshell" and "Thinking in Java" but what do you guys think I should be reading?  I'm assuming that learning java first is the way to go, any advice on where to start will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

If you are at the beginning, then this is the place to start. Processing is designed with you in mind.

I'd get the hang of Processing and then move on to the more serious Java books as your requirements dictate.

For myself, I can say that most of what I need (Java-based) is achieveable with Processing. I can imagine reasons why I would want to step outside this framework, but then for those reasons I'd probably also step outside of JAVA.

Good luck.

Thanks so much, both of you!  Myself and a few friends intend to spend alot of our summer working on a generative art type project, we expect that we will use processing to tie it all together.
