According to the US Census Bureau, the population of the world expands by about 6 million people per month. You can track the latest estimate here, which updates every second. They also provide estimates for the US population, and Java applets to get 'live' estimates. It seems that the Census Bureau updates the scripts every month to more accurately produce estimates, through new statistics they gather.
