Projectors
« on: Apr 9th, 2004, 10:05pm »

I am interested in making a projector purchase, but obviously, I am not that interested in paying 2500 dollars for a really good one.  I just want to play and practice with video installation stuff.  Can anyone give me some suggestions as to brand and model for beginner stuff?

Are these any good?

And secondly, does anyone have a used one they want to part with.

love, r

I don't own a projector myself, so I can't make a specific recommendation, but ProjectorCentral is a good place to start.

For the advice of a community of people who are completely obsessed with things like projectors, video mixers etc, check out the hardware section on VJForums, there's several threads on projectors there and you can always start another. Installation use is a little easier on the projector than VJ use (i.e. you typically won't be using it in a hot, sweaty club filled with smoke), but cheap projectors can end up being a pain if the bulb dies quickly.

As Marius mentions, the blub life is an important factor. The most important factor for me is lumens, which affects the brightness and contrast.

When I was researching my projector purchase, all I heard was 'Buy InFocus, Buy InFocus!'. Their SVGA X1 DLP projector gets great reviews, and is one of few projectors under US$1,000. It also has fantastic bulb life.

(I ended up getting a secondhand InFocus LP755 off eBay, as price was my biggest issue, and I wanted XGA).

If you want it really cheap you could als think about building your own. In germany those projectors are called "Volksbeamer", and most instructions I've found are in german, but here are some in english:

I like the subtitle on the DIYAudio site: "projects by the fanatics, for the fanatics". Never heard of this before, makes sense for the new millenium: Volksbeamers not Volkswagens...

Oh yeah, totally satisfied. I currently use it projected against one of my (blue) walls, and the picture is more than dandy and bright enough, even under roomlight. The image is 68" across, and can be seen in this picture:

For comparison, that's my 19" CRT in the bottom-left hand corner.

There's some barely noticable discolouration in some areas of the LCD, but no more so than the usual discolouration that LCD panels develop after a few years.

Cost was ~US$600. Though with the InFocus X1 being ~US$999, I'm thinking I should've got that, as it turns out I don't really need the XGA for my purposes.

Rock.  I will give those a peek.  I am definitely not looking for something hardcore.  As a beginner, I don't deserve (And can't afford) that luxury.  But I could probably swing 1000$.

thx.

yes, if you are just interested in video installations, and video in particular, XGA is overkill. most of my installations are never projected at more than 640x480 (VGA) for performance reasons. it sure would be nice to do 800 or 1024, but this is unrealistic for most realtime stuff.

and as a VJ, i can tell you that you should always obey the almighty lumens. it is amazing what just a little light can do to your projection, not to mention the VJ-dreaded club fog. and of course, people sweat and breathe, so if the space is not well ventilated you are bound to have a nice water vapor haze. so, if there isn't a price difference, always choose more lumens before more resolution.
