need some help from MAC users
« on: Oct 22nd, 2003, 11:56am »

i'm about to use a mac for working with java and quicktime together...

my questions are:
- which system is best suited? (9.1, 9.2, 10, 10.2)
- with wich version of java?
- and which version of quicktime? (i guess 6.3)
- is qt for java preinstalled?

finally, i don't have access to any mac yet, but one question is torturing my unexperienced-mac-user mind: if i want to launch a java app on mac, is there something similar to the pc "cmd" command-line window?

10-x!

OS X is nice. Unix base provides stability.

Java 2 for Mac?

Yeah...

- is qt for java preinstalled?

Dunno.

This is one thing I love about OS X. It has a console. If you love Unix, you'll love this OS.

10 is the first release of OS X. 10.2 is Jaguar. But you might wanna wait for 10.3 named Panther.

Apple's Java site encourages 1.4.1. However, it requires OS X v10.2.6 or later.

for osx, don't bother with anything early than 10.2.x, they're (10.0.x, and 10.1.x) near-worthless.

quicktime for java is installed by default so long as you're using quicktime 6.3. the recent 6.4 upgrade removes it on 10.2.x, but it's still available on 10.3 which is only becoming officially available this week.

macos9 is also reasonably usable with qtjava, but we haven't released an os9 version of p5 for a good while, and i'm starting to doubt whether we'll ever go back to developing it.. qtjava is installed by default about half the time on os9.

okay, thanks!

to recap all the info here, and based on these ones:

http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/qtjava/

http://proce55ing.net/discourse/yabb/board_Proce55ing_software__bugs_action_display_num_1066358763.html

- qt 6.4 and java 1.4.1 will work together, starting from OSX 10.3.

- for OSX 10.2.x versions, qt 6.3 and java (1.3.1 or 1.4.1) will make it.

a last unanswered question : what is more "stable" on mac, java 1.3.1 or 1.4.1 (providing i don't need the new stuff that comes with 1.4.1)

for osx 10.2.8:

i would say java 1.3.1

java 1.4.1 can be an adventure and i have found your mileage may vary.
