applet loading screen?

this one is possibly quite tricky, but not to say it wouldn't be nice. i remember back in the applet coding hey-day, some people had loading screens on their applets.
it was a very small applet that would appear shortly after the ominous grey-box, and start loading the rest of the applet, but gave some feedback about percentage complete, etc. in a sense, making up for the complete lack of feedback that most browsers give.
i'm not sure how possible this is to do in a stable way across different browsers, as you possibly have to do some slightly dodgey things with the api.
