vowel recognition

hi all, does anyone know of a good way to determine the vowel sound of a voice sample? any good websites with explanations. i've got a decent understanding of how the formants of a sound spectrum could tell you what vowel is being spoken, and on the surface it seems like it wouldn't be a terribly complicated thing to code, but i've been having a hard time wrapping my head around it when i get into the details. i've been looking for helpful sites for adapting what i understand about th acoustics in general to a programmed analysis, but i haven't come up with much. matt

What do you mean for vowel ? You only need to identify vowels and not consonants ? In any case, strong algos can be based on neural networks. In common approaches, their input can be FFT energies in the range 100-4000 Hz and Zero crossing rate Ciao R
