An old classic: Haberli's 1989 Dynadraw
« on: Jan 21st, 2004, 8:38pm »

Hi colleagues,

I took it upon myself to port Paul Haeberli's seminal 1989 "Dynadraw" to Proce55ing last night. It's an important early example of how gesture-augmentation techniques can be used in interactive creation and performance.

I found this piece particularly inspirational about ten years ago, when it was one of the only programs of its kind. Yesterday I wanted to discuss it with someone, and when I discovered with sadness that the applet version (by somebody else) had gone 404, I took matters into my own hands. Casey Reas was kind enough to post my port.

I believe the piece is an essential reference for students of interactivity, and especially for those of us who create expermimental drawing environments.

Haeberli is a brilliant fellow, though he seems to have stopped publishing since about 1996. A quick jaunt through his old Grafica Obscura notebooks (http://www.sgi.com/grafica/index.html) reveals an incredibly fertile mind. His original description and C code for Dynadraw can be found there.

I ported the concept of Dynadraw, but not Paul's original C, and there are undoubtedly many ways that my port could be improved. I apologize that it is so rudimentary and rough-edged, but I do believe it conveys the essential concept of this important historic precursor.

It's a quite beautiful thing! Feels fantastic and the strokes look gorgeous, even with a "ThinkPoint". Thanks!

I just got home and hooked up the Wacom tablet. Dynadraw is a fantastic drawing tool.

With the tablet I just need to be careful not to move too fast.

Would be even nicer to be able to add more than one stroke at a time and to have pen sensitive line width response.

i have to agree, this is a very nice sketch

a little time ago, i did a sketch that uses amit's wacom tablet "plugin" ... the sketch is far from the feel that the Dynadraw has, but mixing the two would be very nice!
