genesis 11:1
« on: Jun 4th, 2003, 10:44pm »

i wanted first to put this bit:
http://www.chronotext.org/bits/029

in the "beyond categories" board, so that the 3 babel fish towers won't feel so lonely there, but being an hebrew reader, i can tell that reading text on such a volume has some interesting properties definitely related to information viz...

you feel that your eye looks at the same fixed point all the time, but actually it scrolls down (hebrew is naturally read right-to-left, top-to-bottom)

well, i should make an english version sometimes...

note: if you are a believer, click the tower once and say amen...

+ there is this technical post on how to do such stuff with processing, within the "tools" board:

excelent, i never realised hebrew could be such an expressive language in terms of form.

besides the religious connotations of a mulitlingual tower of babel, what did you mean by information visualisation?

between us, i'm not a believer, i mean it's possible to treat stories from the bible from a secular, cultural standpoint...

anyway, i think what's related to info-viz here, is more the form than the content, it could have been any other text, in any other language...

what i meant by info-viz? well, i can escape easily from this question by stating that text is data (or noise), therefore it has the potential to be transformed into information, therefore this example is related to info-viz...

but i was also considering the helix as an information visualization device with interesting properties related to the hypnotic / illusional potential held in spirals...

i mean i don't know a lot of info-viz devices that take an horizontal line and turn it into a vertical...

well, yes, the paragraph is such one but the difference is that with a paragraph, your eyes is following the words when you read, so you are aware of the zig-zag movement made by your eyes...

but with the helix, you are not aware of this movement (you think that your eye still looks at the starting corner of the text, but then you realize that you read all the text!)

mm, i see what you mean (with regards to the vertical scrolling properties of a helix), but isn't that kind of info-vis generally related to any ticker-type form? for instance, text wrapped around a sphere would also push the eye on angles other than horizontal.

and don't forget, there're the info-vis (and graphic arts) components of shifting text size (as the text moves around the helix), as well as colour balancing (depth effects, in your babel series).

mm mm...

i guess the "helicoidal principle" is different from the ticker-tape's:

the main point with helices (or any other continuous curve geodesic to a volume, e.g: a sphere, btw...) seems to be that you can build a continuous reading space (i.e: without line breaks) that is readable through a simple (and cyclic) rotation...

continuity in text is an interesting area to play with. i suppose it's the topic of many a graphic artist's afternoon daydream.

btw, if you haven't already seen Josh Nimoy's text software stuff, it's pretty cool:

(he seems to be having problems with his 'net hosting, so don't be surprised if that page isn't there when you try)

i saw this a few months ago...

josh nimoy is a very talented guy!

rewatching the quicktime: i like in particular the last part where text is written in a tree-like way...

it seems to me strange that multi dimensional type has not been so much explorated until now...

does anyone knows other examples in the field?
