casey has returned to LA after two weeks in the luxurious processing inc boston offices (the one third of my room that isn't taken over by moving boxes). megabucket (70) is much further along as a result. lots of really exciting progress. highlights of the week include a new serial api, lots of video fixes, far better reference materials, and drinks with robert of flight404. we hope that with this next release we'll have 98% of the api complete (with the exception of lighting, as it looks now). the release will break many things (BImage is now PImage, and net/serial are totally different, lots more surprises), so we're holding it back until we've completed all the api-related breaking that we plan to do, so that you only have to "rewrite" programs once. tearing the band-aid off quickly, as it were. while i really really don't like to talk about dates (it's tough to "promise" things for a project that we're doing in our spare time.. some humorous date predictions can be found in the archives), our hope is to have 70 ready sometime in august (so that profs/teachers can make curriculum plans), with things stabilizing (a followup 71 or even 72) towards september. the goal is to have the newer releases working well by the fall (starting sept 1) so that people can use it for courses. that's the plan, at any rate. keep your fingers crossed or keep us in your prayers to whatever deity you might be serving these days. previous status: http://processing.org/discourse/yabb/board_Collaboration_action__display_num_1087830271.html

Some exciting news: the ITP program at New York University will be using Processing in place of Director to teach their 100 incoming graduate students. As Ben said, we're working hard to get an improved and stable release out before the Fall'04 school year. If you're planning to use Processing for teaching in Fall'04, please be in contact. We'll need alot of people testing. In addition to improving the software, we're also working to document it in a better way. The plan is to support three separate references: the current reference, an extended reference including more advanced functions and essential portions of the java language, and an automated Javadoc style reference for people who need that level of detail. I'm teaching a new course at UCLA this Fall (an introduction to Interaction and Media Art for Sophomores) and we'll be working on the tutorials in earnest to have an online "textbook" for the course. I hope this will be a useful guide for people without previous knowledge of programming. We're also very excited about the recent release of the Chinese, French, and Spanish references. Look for more coming soon...
