Hi everyone -
My name is Jae and I'm one of the GSoC participants this year working on improving the beginner/new user experience for the PDE.
I am currently working on a Welcome Tool part of my project and would love the community's input. The goal of the Tool is to allow a smoother introduction to the PDE for new/beginner users.
Currently, the idea is to implement a window that would include screenshots/gifs of where to find certain features and users would be able to click through the pages.
If you could fill out this survey https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSddagNLnQHNuj8GhEWzL420uWd_IxczdGB7k-q-EJTpaYb7MQ/viewform?usp=sf_link I would really appreciate it!
Thanks so much!
At least it is clear those global variables are related to that snippet
I agree with @jeremydouglass... even if it is not that bad I would prefer to encourage good coding practices.
So I still don't wrap my head around the concept but still I find it interesting, even possible a GSOC task (?). So after you have several ACUs, there will be documentation from each of them, right? For instance, right now there are several libraries in Processing. Some of them are straight forward to figure out (name, common usage, etc) but other ones are obscure (but still useful). My question is, how would snippets differentiate from (small) libraries.
Do snippest already exist in the forum that could be used as a demonstration? Would be this a good point to suggest snippet ideas? For instance, implementing the doubleClickEvent()
could qualify as a snippet? @quark What about ACUs? (Yes, I could google it btw... just bringing some richness and needed details to the chat)
being integrated with one of the code snippets web services / APIs
@jeremydouglass Do you know of any webservices to consider as an example?
Sure you are! Give it a try, you'd be surprised at what you can do in a weekend.
@KevinWorkman @bird @quark @ everybody
This could be a chance for some team building/bonding experience? I can see some amazing expertise here that could be funneled for something great[er]!

We migrated the project to github.com/processing-r/Processing.R. And I have no time to maintain it because of some personal reasons. If anyone is interested in this project, feel free to contribute. And welcome to apply GSoC based on it.
Is this related to your other post about javadoc generation? I don't have experience with GSOC but it is my believe that when you get assigned a mentor, thins should be a bit easier or so one would hope. You can always bounce ideas here in the forum. You might get attention of forum goers( even those who are more observers than players) by asking the right question and provide good details.

If you browse the forum for shaders, you can find many attempts of people trying to get shaders working, either basic ones or complex ones. Trying to implement shaders is counter to the Processing concept aka. making things easier.
Other tags to search in the forum: post by the user nabr, as he has been and active member embracing shader technology.
If you google codeanticode, he also has some web resources and some intro material, similar to what you find in the Processing website under tutorials: Shader chapter.
Exporting shader from opemframeworks or shader toys: not sure if that is easy. My understanding reading from different prev posts, you need to understand how Processing does its magic with OpenGL. Then if you integrate your shader, you will need to use terms as defined in Processing. Take this with a grain of salt as I do not have much experience. You can explore the Processing source code to see how Processing works and, after taking a guide tour in openframeworks, you can see better if such exporting/importing codes would work.
Hopefully other forum members will provide a better insight. Even write better documentation. On a good news, there is a potential one of the GSOC projects could provide a window to directly work with OpenGL in the PDE. We just need to wait and see what projects are accepted.

There are some other Processing / Python projects in the works... check out p5py from last year's GSOC 2017.
I'm a really big fan of the Jython (Python 2.7) Processing mode. It doesn't have great performance, but you can still do amazing things with it, despite its very particular limitations and constraints.

Hi, :-h I am Avirup and I'm a 2nd year student. I have been recently introduced to GSOC and am very exited to have submitted my proposal. Here's the docs link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c9G50EpHfi6Urp10LbAlsdvZbL3yog1trVFnD709ro8/edit?usp=sharing
I having been learning to use p5.js for some time now and would absolutely love to contribute to it. :x This is my first time in GSoC and I would like to make an add-on for making 2D/3D games and a cli to help with the development process.
Thanks a lot :)
I know its too late for asking suggestions for the proposal. But its only now I'm knowing that suggestions for proposal can be requested in the forum. Please review it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B5ON2UWbrHZy1kfnbNR7DG1i3LocD_D2ETGYjqcTyrA/edit?usp=sharing Thanks Jithin KS

Looking forward to any suggestions. @shiffman.
Hello, I know its late to submit a proposal now but i have known about GSoC lately. This is my draft proposal, I hope to get feedback on it before the deadline.

Hi all,
My name is Sithe and I'm a 3rd year Computer Science and Mathematics student from Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I saw some of Daniel Shiffman's Coding Train tutorials a while ago aaaaand I'm hooked. Really exciting videos :)
It took me a while to look into organisations for GSoC but I really feel like The Processing Foundation is something I would love to be a part of. I hope I'm not too late to get a draft proposal in for review. This is my first GSoC and I'm interested in helping improve the experience for first time users for PDE.
I would really appreciate it if someone could review my draft proposal and give me some feedback before I submit it. Here is the link to the Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pLPP4q0w6z4zaAeGs_Q5uRZirgCPE5AvUsG1az-He4M/edit?usp=sharing
Also, is it alright to submit multiple proposals to the same organisation? Would you advise for or against that?
Thank you so much for your time
Hello everyone,
@reas, tagging @shiffman just in case.
I'm Nikhil from Bangalore, India. I posted my Draft Proposal for GSoC 2018 a while ago but I recieved no feedback or response. I suspect this is my fault due to my inability to form a proper draft and not sharing it anywhere, I have made edits and changes to the draft after looking at other submissions. Here's the link to the draft : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hvvAfJQsswZNkOFeGGRenBvt1TGTxI9vUkHVvW2Ssto/edit?usp=sharing
All and any feedback is appreciated, be it positive or negative. Thank you.
Hola Community!
Here's the link to my proposal on Development Environment: Beginner/New User Experience Features. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X6q0rrP8dV6NXmxK0iT50OIq92xPHjNikbn-Rd5k70I/edit#
Your unbiased review is of utmost importance. Please recommend changes that might be needed. I am staying awake until the deadline is over so I'll make sure to implement your suggestions.
This is my first appearance in GSoC and I'd love to start with great power and zeal. Below is the link to my proposal -
p5.js(Updated hello.p5js.org site) / Proposal for GSoC 2018.
I need some comments from geeks before finally submitting this draft.
Thanks for your proposal @afrospacebuddha! The content of the hello video itself would be developed in collaboration with the project mentor. We would like to feature many p5.js contributors in a new video possibly including the GSoC student if they are interested! The main work we are looking for is the development of the code for playing the video and running the interactive elements. Hope this helps a bit!
@arishi it is not required to contribute on Github to be accepted into GSoC, however, showing and past work or open source software development on Github is helpful for evaluating your application.
Hi!
I had submitted my draft proposal on the 18th through the GSoC portal. I was wondering if I could improve it before the final submission! I am really keen on getting your feedback, if possible...
