Announcing ruby-processing-2.2.0

ruby-processing-2.2.0 is now available from github, it is based on processing-2.0.3, and uses the latest version of jruby (jruby-1.7.5). Included with the download are more than 330 worked examples, the majority translated from vanilla processing and the contributed processing libraries (toxiclibs, fisica etc). As with other ruby projects ruby-processing is distributed as a gem, unfortunately the built gem is too big to be hosted on rubygems, but the build/install process is very simple. The beauty of ruby processing is that you can in the main use most of the ruby language (version 1.9.3/2.0) including gems (eg MDArray, which is similar to numpy) and also the processing java libraries. So you can have the best of both worlds.

  • Nice! Thanks!

  • ruby-processing has to be a pretty good advert for open source and github, but I doubt many projects have such a radical look to their commit log, which probably says more about Jeremy Ashkenas willingness to pass on the baton (what with coffeescript and his other projects, and his sabbatical he probably had no choice). Of course ruby-processing could not exist without two other great open source projects processing and jruby.

Since the vanilla processing-2.1 series will now all be distributed with an included jre (including Mac), there is no-longer an advantage in using the OSX version to to build ruby-processing for all platforms. I have created a new build script for Windows and Linux, so that users will be able to use the processing version that they have probably already downloaded. Please try it out get it here, build for mac, linux and windows is for latest processing-2.1 (since 28 October 2013).
