Audio Line-In

Hey! I posted this a while ago in the old forum … unfortunately nobody could help.

Recently I realized that my MacBook Pro (Retina Display) doesn’t have a built-in audio line-in! I’m quite upset about this since I paid lots of money for this machine and even with my older MacBook I was able to switch between audio in and out with its single jack.

Consequently I bought an external USB audio interface for an audio input which seems to work fine, but even if I select the USB interface as input in the OSX settings, Processing (with the minim library) still uses the built-in microphone.

Does anybody have an idea what I could do? Thanks so much!

  • Hi! I just found this:

It says it's problematic, but I don't know if there is a workaround. If there is no other solution, could you do the sound part with something like SuperCollider or PD?

  • Hey, Thanks a lot for help!

You mean I could try to get the sound with SuperCollider and send it to Processing? Unfortunately the entire sketch is based on the Minim library. Morover performance is super essential since the visuals are live. This is really frustrating.

This is a job for SoundFlower:

  • I didn’t get it to work with just using Soundflower, however there is a mini application called LineIn to pass the sound from the interface to Soundflower. Amazing, thanks Casey!
