Mac OS X - can't run programs

edited January 2014 in Using Processing

I'm trying to use 2.1 on Mac OS X 10.8.3 - the IDE starts, but nothing happens when trying to run programs (even the simplest "hello world" to the console). The stop button works and the IDE doesn't hang, but no output window appears and nothing appears on the console.

I've renamed the sketchbook folder as advised in the troubleshooting guide, but it hasn't made any difference. It recreated (empty) libraries+tools subdirectories so it is finding the right folder. I also deleted preferences.txt in case there were any backward compatibility issues.

I've also looked at the logs in the system console but there doesn't seem to be anything relevant.

The last version I used on this machine was 2.0b7 - which runs fine. This seems like it is probably a Java problem but I thought it was embedded in the executable from 2.1? Is there a way to investigate what is going on?

Grateful for any advice.
