Is it possible to check for wifi? If so, how?

This looks like a very hard problem, as for Java, the internet connection is exactly the same if it's connected through WiFi or LAN. You'd need platform specific (native) code for this and I doubt it can be done in Java.
Unless you're on android, in which case there are plenty of examples online.
