online processing classes
May 7th, 2010, 3:26pm

Hi there,

Is there any school that offer online Processing classes I am leaning by myself moving trough the books and working on personal project one after the other but I really miss the assistance of a teacher and the pleasure to be working with a group on a collective project.

I am wondering if a university would offer such a classe Or if few teachers would be interested to create a group of few students and creating a course.

I could help creating the online environment (wordpress, forum, buddy press, doku wiki, chat room or whatever is needed) since I work as a web master and I had previous experience in setting up online classes for small group. I am sure the demand is there! (and I am sure teachers are also in big demand) ~ I would see that this online class would require the student to have gone trough few of the main books and have some project already under their belt - because a complete beginner course would be 1- not that interesting 2- a lot in demand.

If anyone are interested (wether you are a teacher or you are learning processing and ready to move on to the 'next level' ) we can get something started. I am committed to learning processing for the next 2 years for sure so anytime is good for me Wink

Well I guess if we could build a group of people who wants to take class and see how much we are willing to spend and find the teacher that would be willing to teach that could be a great first step.

I would be willing to spend around 500$ for an online class that takes processing concept to the next level of creativity. Going in depth in video audio - library making - interactivity with osc and other protocol - networking and maybe fractal and particles and other higher end mathematical representation. Or maybe a set of library could be further explored... anyway lets see where this gets us !

Please keep my name on the list for this. I would definitely be interested. I, too, am teaching myself (which reminds me of the old quote about lawyers- he who represents himself has a fool for an attorney as well as a client.) and I'm learning from wherever I can. So, that would make my life easier. Thanks for the suggestion. Let me know if we get enough people.

Hey!

I'd be happy to help out with this project, at least part time.
Been coding processing for 5+ years now, and I've made quite a few apps.. My website isn't updated now, as I've had other things to prioritize, but if you want some "references" just ask.
The last few things I've made is a tower defense game, and a proof-of-concept platform game using Processing.js, and html elements ( http://seltar.org/htmlgame -  took about 4 hours ).

Keep me posted on this!

I read this on someone's post.

"Interesting to note that Processing was initially built by students of John Maeda, who had created. Design by Numbers, which was aimed at providing non-programmer designs a way to make designs algorithmically. The syntax is much simpler than Java..."

As long as the course comes with an instructional video and a detailed pdf course manual to back it up, people will usually sign up.. I'd rather take an online class with a video instructional I can play over and over again rather than sit in a real class and take down notes  Cheesy

At least, those who are not too tech savvy can learn right from their desks. I've helped a lot of people with web stuff, but I've always shooed away from anything that looks too technical. But whenever there's a video instructional that comes with some processing work, I always say "Oh, that wasn't too difficult after all".

Hi,

Interesting that you ask.  I'm developing a class right now with O'Reilly Media that will be starting August 31st.  It will be a live, free, video course, while it's going.  There will also be a pay version that includes downloads (pdf of all slides etc.) and access to the videos anytime.

It will be at http://training.oreilly.com and you can send an email to training@oreilly.com to be notified when the class is available.

Cheers,
