Imperfect lines & shapes
Mar 12th, 2010, 5:56am

Hello all,    does anyone have suggestions for how to create lines, shapes or gestures in Processing which are - for lack of a better word - primitive-looking? For example lines whose thickness varies; circles which aren't perfectly round - or ellipses which aren't perfeclty elliptical ... etc?

Can Processing do this out of the box or are there libraries available which provide fuzziness functionality?

Thanks very much for any help,
- CJ

For the lines thing it should be fairly easy to write your own drawline method which jitters the thickness or varies it in some more systematic way.

For the ellipses that aren't quite ellipses etc. I would recommend curveVertex to build up shapes: http://processing.org/reference/curveVertex_.html. Much easier than trying to use bezier shapes and will work fine for what you are doing.

Also makes use of curveTightness which gives you a bit more control over the shape.

you could also build your circles and lines out of little moving particles. that make the circle imperfect... that doesnt need to be animated if you dont need to.
maybe this gives you an idea http://www.generative-gestaltung.de/P_2_2_3_01

Thank you Giles & Cedric for your suggestions ... I will do some more digging in those areas.
