I am playing a mp3 from an application (e.g. VLC Player, or media player)

How do I get either minim or sonia to  read that sound from the sound card instead of the line in ?

If you are on a Windoze box, open your (system) volume control. I don't know what the details are for Vista/7, but XP go to menu [Options] > [Properties] and select [Recording]. Make sure that [Stereo Mix] (and/or [Mono Mix]) is selected before hitting [OK]. Your "Volume Control" window should now be titled "Recording Control", where you can [Select] the Stereo Mix (or Mono Mix, or CD Player, or Microphone, or whatever you like) as the "recording source".
