Do not install Java 1.5 on Snow Leopard

As the subject says. It is likely to break your Java installation, causing strange errors when you start Processing, or preventing it from running at all. I've now had multiple people reporting this as a Processing bug that they've broken their machines this way.

If you don't like that Apple removed Java 1.5 from Snow Leopard, please contact them directly: http://bugreport.apple.com/

We don't like the fact that 1.5 is missing either, because it means spending time on Tuesday evenings explaining to people that they shouldn't install 1.5 on Snow Leopard.

Hi Fry,

I've been using Java 1.5 on Snow Leopard for months now, without any issue.

Maybe the problem some people are facing is related to mistake they made while installing it (i posted a link to a guide here before).  Embarrassed

Hey Fry, how about this one ?

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20100123192950640

On step 3 it says:

Quote:
First use Finder to go to System » Library » Frameworks » JavaVM.framework » Versions and delete the two aliases (symlinks) 1.5 and 1.5.0. Don’t skip this step, because otherwise the extraction will follow the symlinks and overwrite the contents of the 1.6.0 folder, oops!

I think this might be the reason why people are getting problems you described.

I'd like to second that switching back to 1.5 on snow leopard has been a beneficial move for me to make.  I can use sonia now without any issue.

I've heard a lot of people are having serious problems with the downgrade, though, and i think jaylfk is right that a lot of folks must be messing up the rollback.

I would make sure that they are using the trusted 1.5 installation provided by Apple.  Here's the tutorial I followed that worked for me on two of my machines.

Yes, I understand that it doesn't always cause problems. How about this instead: please do not install Java 1.5 on OS X 10.6.

If you have a problem with using Processing on Snow Leopard, please file a bug with us, or with Apple, depending on the nature of the problem.
