On page documenting expand() I believe the reference at the bottom should be concat() not contract().

why do you think so? contract makes sense, as it is the opposite of expand, although it is not used anymore as mentioned in the corresponding page http://processing.org/reference/contract_.html

Well you are right that this page should be updated, but the link to contract() should be replaced by one to subset().
