Ludum Dare (Game Compo) Entry: Crystal Cave

Hey all,

this was my first go at Ludum Dare (48-hour game competition).
The theme was announced at 11 PM (EST) Friday night: "Caverns."
Like most people, I barely finished under the 48-hour wire..it is a lot of fun!  A great community over there and a lot of amazing games made in the past 2 days.

And here is a gallery of images, mostly of my struggle with OpenGL:

Voting will go on for a couple of weeks, I recommend checking out the lot.  You can see all 144 finished entries here:

That's pretty neat - no way I could produce something like that in such little time  Shocked

It's hard though - sometimes difficult to get a sense of the depth: some of the caves lead to very narrow passages with no obvious way out; and it would be really nice to have a brake Wink

Hey, thanks for that, I added a "helpful tip" -- try to keep the nose-point of your ship pointed at darkness.  Then you should be fine.  (Seeing when you're hitting the bottom and top is still hard...some crystals are just not worth the risk).  It's the same cavern each play, within a single run of the applet, so you can start to learn the dangerous areas...  -- Ben

And by the way, because there are 144 Ludum Dare entries, I threw up a 12 x 12 grid of their screenshots here:

Awsome game BenHem. One question: how do you create the popup window at the beginning of the game, about the java2D? I've been trying to create popup dialogs but it always freezes screen. Any help is appreciated!

Hey, thanks... if it's asking if you want to disable directdraw, that's because I forgot to *disable* that.  It's a "feature" of JOGL.  Not sure how to ask for popups, but you can make facsimiles quite easily ... I actually prefer those as a user, because they're entirely contained in the program window.  My 2¢.
