Converting Audio
Jul 28th, 2009, 12:26pm

Hello everyone.  I hope that I am not repeating a similar topic, but I have an interesting project idea and I was wondering if there might be anyone out there who could point me in the correct direction.

Basically, what I would like to do, is to play audio from an instrument into a microphone and have it run through processing and turned out from the program has something completely different.  In essence, let's say I play a G on a trumpet and I want some random, electronic noise to be outputed instead through processing.

Does anyone know of such a method?

ok don't get me wrong, stick around in processing, the more the merrier, but for your idea, unless you want to do video, i think you should take a look at http://puredata.info, or the latest manual here: http://en.flossmanuals.net/puredata

puredata has much more efficient ways to convert audio signals to control streams, estimate the pitch of a note, follow an envelope or detect audio events.

That being said, you can do it in processing too, I guess you could take a look at the Minim library. It's just that the Java sound API is no match for the real thing.

have fun see you around  Cool
