is there anyway to keep special characters in strings loaded from a text file? when i print the strings i've loaded, any special characters are replaced by "?"

Check on the file encoding of your source text file.  I believe Processing needs everything to be encoded as UTF-8.  (Anything else will come through in weird ways.)

changing the encoding to UTF-8 seems to have done the trick. thanks.
