Hello there!

First of all, please tell me if my english is hard to understand, as I'm french I don't speak (well, write too) really well. Don't hesitate to correct me Smiley

I'm Amaury, a french student in computer science school in Bordeaux.
Since a few weeks, I've been reading and testing some things about Processing. I began today a training course into a game-dev team, and I will work with Processing.

During the next 3 months, I will be often here, asking a lot, reading too. I also will talk about my work (if allowed by my boss, I'm not sure I can). All I can say now is that it will involve midi music processing, and 3D visualization...

So, I already have a question:
My boss asked me to choose the components for a new computer, on which I will work during the training course. I know I will need a quite powerful one, but I don't know what exactly is nedded for Processing to work well.

Using a wizard, I made a pré-config which seems to be powerful enough, but I would like you gave me some advice about it:

-Hard drive : a 3,5 inches Maxtor diamond max , SATA II, 7200rpm, 500gb and a 32mb cache
-GPU : the ASUS ENGTS250, based on the GTS 250 Nvidia chipset, a PCI-express 26x bus, and a 512mb memory
-Motherboard :  the ASUS striker II NSE (chipset Intel 775)
-CPU : A Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300, each core is 2500Mhz, and it as a 4Mo cache mem
-Audio card : Asus Xonar D2
-Other : a 1000W alim, a cooler CollerMaster V8

The other component don't seem important to me.

Of course, I tried to check the compatability between each component, but I'm not a specialist.
About the sound card, It seems my choice isn't adapted. My boss suggested I look about the audio card by Echo, like the layla 3g
Another requirement is that the computer be silent, as musical dev don't like noise Smiley

Well, I'll be on the forum during the whole day, so don't hesitate to ask for more details.

Thanks a lot
Amarok

Tiens, un Bordelais, j'ai fait toutes mes études (Math Sup, IUT électronique, Enserb (1re année), Uni jusqu'à DEA) à Bordeaux (je suis d'Orthez (64)). Quelle école ?

I don't do much 3D and even less Midi, so I fear I won't help much.
But I can already say Processing is running quite well on light/old configs (a 5 years old computer with 1GB of memory). Now for good 3D perf, I suppose the CPU is important and even more the GPU. Your config seems OK (but I am not a hardware specialist).

Salut le Bordelais,

Je suis Normand d'origine, mais je suis a l'IdC (Institut de Cognitique), une toute jeune école d'ingé.

Well, after a little talk with my boss, it seems that we don't really need any audio input, as the project don't need to be connected with any instrument.

It seems too that a major requirement is the silentness of the computer. I actually am seeking for a quiet alim.

It seems that a simple output audio card might be enough.

Amaury
