mouse mvnts not recognized

I am a beginner trying to work through the Getting Started: Welcome to Processing tutorial.
The Hello mouse sketch seems not to work: there is no response to my mouse.
This is being implemented on a Linux box (Ubuntu v.9.4.)
I'm thinking that the Processing environment is not using the correct /dev file.
Can anyone offer me some help?
