Java was source closed for a long time, it have been fully opened only recently...
Open source is like a Pandora box: once opened, it is hard to close it!
But of course, Oracle can make some improvements (performances, crypto perhaps, etc.) and keep them closed.
Lot of people are speculating on this acquisition, what will be kept (MySQL? JavaFX?) or left (NetBeans?).
