Website examples showing up as plain gray squares
Apr 15th, 2009, 12:03am

A strange thing is happening when I cycle through the examples on the 'Learning->Examples: Basics' pages. Sometimes, instead of an image, my browser shows only a gray square. Not all examples have this problem, and the ones that do sometimes seem to display properly if I navigate away and then back to them. One that is not displaying at the moment is 'Color Wheel': all I see is a uniform gray field. Many of the other examples do this consistently as well.

(I'd upload a small screenshot but I can't figure out how to do it in this forum.)

My browser is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032609 Firefox/3.0.8 running on Windows XP.

You should also look at the Java console (look at the Java icon in the system tray), perhaps you will have an exception trace there.

Sorry, I'm such a Java ignoramus I can't figure this out.

My system tray has a Java icon with a context menu item labeled "Open 1.6.0_13 Console". When I open that, it is empty, and remains empty when I refresh the Color Wheel example page.

My browser has a Tools->Java Console menu item, but it's grayed out.

So I'm not sure where else to look for errors commng from running the Color Wheel example.

can you check that java is enabled? in firefox go to options ( Tools -> Options ), click on "Content" tab and make sure "Enable Java" is checked. That is the only reason i can see why the console should be greyed out ..

If it's not that can you check how the applets look like on Internet Explorer?

You might want to go to Sun site and download the latest JRE, perhaps it will fix your problems.

I do have the latest JRE, I think. My control panel has a Java icon whose About tab reports 1.6.0_13-b03.

I tried the examples in Chrome and they all work fine. So the problem is peculiar to Firefox.

(For anyone coming late to this thread, my browser is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032609 Firefox/3.0.8 on Windows XP.)

And yes, Java is enabled in my Firefox browser. As I said, not all of the examples have this problem. Only some, e.g., the Color Wheel example. And sometimes, when the page draws, I can see a flash of an image in the space that ends up covered by a gray square.

My concern is that if my fairly vanilla browser on my fairly vanilla Windows machine can't display these applets reliably, Processing probably won't work for what I have in mind. Cry

can you open the colorwheel example from the examples included in processing (Open-icon > Basics > Color > ...) and export that as applet (rightmost icon int the PDE) and then try it in your firefox (open index.html)? does that work?

thanks

Maybe you have installed an addon to firefox that messes it up. Like an Adblocker.
Or maybe there is something wrong with the applet / object tags..

Could you also post a link to one that isn't working, and one that is working, so we can see if there is any difference.

Now, a couple of days later, all the web examples seem to work for me in Firefox. Somewhere along the line I may have rebooted my Windows machine. (Or it may have rebooted itself.) That's the only change I can think of that might explain the new behavior of the example programs.
