Educator's space on the board
Mar 12th, 2009, 9:59pm

Hi all,
Recently back from the fabulous artandcode conf at CMU, which had a wonderful Processing showing, including Ben, Casey, Dan, myself, numerous other instructors and many users. Ben and Casey gave a really inspiring presentation!

During the conference, in a Processing workshop I led, a few instructors asked about space on this site for more pedagogical related discussion on Processing's use in the classroom. I thought it was an awesome idea, and it was followed up with some more positive chatter on the conference site. Casey did mention that at one point such space existed but had very little activity.

So, I think we'd like to perhaps revive this effort in some way, maybe with a new topic to the discourse  or maillist. What do you think. I have pledged to help moderate this effort (and I think Professor Shiffman will be assisting as well).

Best,
Ira

I don't think I would have much to contribute to such a forum myself, but generally speaking I think it's a great idea!

hi ira!

it sure would be nice to get in touch with other educators .. just knowing who teaches what and where. beyond that i can't really see what i'd want from such an effort / place, so maybe you can outline the ideas that came up at AnC?

... or maybe that's just it: install a meeting place and see what comes up.

best and thanks!

Further food for thought: here is a blog post I wrote a while back for the Northwest Progressive Institude, advocating for an integrated math-and-art curriculum, in which we get kids to learn math skills as tools for realizing their artistic impulses:

FYI, you can see the old Educators space from the ALPHA board on the bottom of the page:

Thanks Casey,
It's really interesting reading those old posts, in the context of the discussions I'm having with art/design (and even CS) depts I speak with now - we really have come a long way.
