help me to learn processing

Hi guys, im new here and im very impressed of the power of processing, its really amazing ... soo i decided to learn it

my plan is to make a little abstract ants-simulation which i expand step by step (maybe it sounds a little bit silly but i think it will make a lot fun [for me]). the problem is that i cant overview the possibilities. plz help me a little bit to choose the right stuff of processing.

so ok i start to ask Smiley

my first goal is to make a simple 2d-map. on the whole map should be "dirt" or something like that and spores which "eat" it ... the spores can only move on the places where no dirt is, mkay understand? Smiley

2d-map is no problem and the spores are no problem, but i dont know how can i put the special mass on the map. i thought to apply a big array which have two states (free and dirty) but i dont want that it looks like a chessfield, it should be more blunt ... do you know what i mean, do you know a nice nice solution?
