infrared (IR) paint anyone? (Read 6421 times)
infrared (IR) paint anyone?
Feb 6th, 2009, 11:59am

does anyone know of a good source for near invisible IR/infrared paint? that is: i would like to be able to see the paint in IR light with IR cam / goggles, but in plain daylight to the human eye, i would like the paint to be invisible... possible?

btw i was not quite sure where to put this post... perhaps there should be a "bar sport" type area, or maybe a "physical setup" area?

I can be very wrong (ie. don't rely on my answer!), but I believe you would need more heating devices than paint to generate IRs... Now, perhaps a very reflective paint over a very absorbing material might do the job?

You would have more luck with UV (ultra-violet) light, I think.

ok, to further specify: i'm looking for IR relfective paint -- i'm planning to flood the room in IR light, and then have the paint reflect IR light.

it is important that the IR paint is transparent / near invisible, as i'm planning to use it as a second layer of information on top of prints and pictures...

I've been looking into this as well, and got the advise from a camouflage researcher to look at chlorophyll as a highly reflective substance in the near ir spectrum. Not sure how that would work as  Other than that I was told to test different types of paint or varnish, but I haven't done that yet.

Please report back to this thread with any findings!

Hey Jabstarr...

Did you get some ink or a IR pen? How did it go? I've been looking for such a thing only today and found the site maxmax.com aswell so I sent an info request to them.

I'm wishing to paint/ink/pen fudicial markers on either clothing or my body to interact with an IR cam in a visible light and IR light areana and either reacTivision or CommunityCoreVision to send events to synths, apps and video devices over OSC. IS this similar to what you are doing?
